Where to Start with Wellness.

If you’re reading this, great job putting more effort into your overall health and wellbeing. Wellness is so much more than a lack of disease or physical ailments. It is an amalgamation of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. I’m proud of you for being here and for taking the initiative to take care of yourself.

I’m going to start this one off with a hot take: “self-care” is an overrated, over used, washed up phrase that too many people throw around when what they’re really doing and promoting is self-indulgent, unhealthy practices and habits. Whew! Had to get that one off my chest. I say all this to say, self-care does NOT equal wellness! Do people actually think a glass of wine in a bubble bath is going to solve their problems or make them feel better? Maybe for a few minutes it will, but not in the long term. Wellness requires a long time desire to truly better yourself, inside and out.

When I think wellness, I think of so many things – Am I eating enough to nourish my body? What am I consuming on the internet? When was the last time I went outside? How many times did I move my body this week? Am I giving myself permission to just be present in this moment? The list goes on. All of these things add up and work together to keep us well (or work against us to keep us sick and scared). That’s why balance is such a huge part of wellness. We have to balance all these different components in a way that sets us up for future success but also allows us to enjoy right now.

We aren’t always going to eat the most nutrient dense foods, we aren’t going to workout every single day forever, we’re bound to stress about what’s to come or what might happen. The balancing act is no easy task. But, it’s better to strive for consistency and still be able to go with the ebbs and flows of day to day life than to strive for perfection and beat ourselves up when we find it to be unattainable. We can take little steps each day to improve our overall wellness – it doesn’t have to happen all at once. The human brain is so resistant to change, it’s no wonder why we often fail at doing something differently or making better choices when we have an all or nothing mindset.

Whether this is the beginning of your wellness journey or you’re years into the commitment, there will always be work to be done. There will always be adjustments to make, new things to try, trial and error. It doesn’t necessarily get easier, you just get better at navigating the journey. I look forward to sharing tips and tricks on how to incorporate more aspects of wellness into your life. Here’s to getting better at getting better <3
