Recently I decided I wanted something other than waffles for breakfast! I looked in my pantry, saw the oats, and instantly thought oatmeal sounded good. I grew up eating the Quaker maple & brown sugar instant oatmeal packets and LOVED them, so maybe I was just feeling nostalgic. But honestly, this homemade version is even better and I love that I know what ingredients went into it. Plus, it probably takes the same amount of time to make as the packets and it’s more cost friendly 🙂
You Will Need:
- Small/Medium Saucepan
- Whisk
- Measuring Spoons & Cups
- Bowl for Serving
- About 10 minutes for prep & cook time
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup old fashioned oats (51 grams)
- 1 cup milk (245 grams)
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- Pinch of salt
Instructions:
- Add the milk, oats, and cinnamon to the saucepan and whisk together as you place the pan over medium heat.
- Allow the mixture to come to a simmer, stirring occasionally – this should only take a few minutes.
- Once it starts to simmer, turn the heat down to low and let it cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
- After 5 minutes, pour the mixture into your serving bowl and add the maple syrup, brown sugar, and pinch of salt.
- Stir to combine all the ingredients and once it’s cool enough to eat, enjoy!
*Note: For a thicker oatmeal, allow the mixture to cook for a bit longer; For a thinner oatmeal add a bit more milk once the cooking process is done. Also, I use organic old fashioned oats and organic whole milk, but you can substitute with whatever milk you prefer. You can garnish with more syrup or brown sugar if you want it sweeter, or add mix ins like nuts or berries for a fun touch! This recipe can easily be doubled to serve 2 people, or even quadrupled to have on hand as a meal prep option.
